Board Member
Would you like to become a Board member at the ALCC? We have a position opening up at the ALCC and YOU could be that person! We are looking for candidates with strong leadership qualities and the sincere desire to support alternative communities.
Please take a moment to read our By-Laws as it relates to becoming a board member:
Bylaw 2: Becoming a board member
In order to apply to become a board member the applicant must have the following:
2.1. Have participated, attended or volunteered significantly at the ALCC
2.2. Apply to board@thealcc.org in writing and include;
a) Reasons for wanting to join
b) What strengths and skills they possess that they feel would be of benefit to the ALCC
c) What projects or goals they would like to bring to the ALCC
d) What part of our mission speaks most to them
Your application will be reviewed by the board, and accepted or rejected by majority decision. We will notify you as soon as a decision is reached.
If your application is approved, you will need to attend our Annual General meeting Sunday March 4th from 1pm to 4pm and participate in the elections. Be prepared to make a 3 to 5 minute speech outlining why people should vote for you.
It’s important to know what it means to be on our board and what might be expected of you. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our By-Laws about board members roles and responsibilities:
Bylaw 4: Board of Directors
4.1. The Board of Directors are elected at the AGM.
a) The Board of Directors is a group that is directed by the ALCC membership to make decisions in line with the ALCC Constitution, bylaws, and policies.
b) To be eligible to run, see by-law #2
4.2 Compositions and terms
a) The make-up of the board should reflect the body for whom ALCC services are provided.
b) The term of office of directors shall be two years, starting at the close of the AGM at which they are elected.
c) Outgoing directors are eligible for re-election.
d) The board shall have the right to appoint vacant director positions between elections, as long as candidates fulfill eligibility requirements. At any given time, two (2) standing directors may be appointed.
e) Board members may have staff positions in the ALCC outside of the board
f) In order to be elected to President position, the person must have served at least one term as a Board member.
g) There are three board members
h) Board members are expected to attend all board meetings.
i) Board members are required to put in a regular amount of volunteer hours per week (around15) as it is a working board
4.3 Roles and Responsibilities of the board – The management, administration and control of the affairs of the ALCC are vested in the Board, subject to these Bylaws. Without diminishing the generality of the foregoing, the Board shall:
a) Make changes to ALCC policies as it considers advisable for the conduct of the affairs of the ALCC provided that such rules and regulations are consistent with the constitution and Bylaws.
b) Appoint committees and delegations to carry out special tasks deemed necessary by the board.
c) Adopt and manage the annual budget.
d) Ensure the keeping of proper financial records.
e) Be accountable and informed employers to the staff of the ALCC.
f) Maintain accountability and transparency to the membership.
g) Maintain all functions necessary for the legitimate operating of the ALCC.
Of course outside of the political jargon of the job there is the reward of working with a great team for a great cause and we know you will have fun with us. We are a FUN place to volunteer!
